Dr. Schlobig, a prominent physician in Zwickau, had a private bathing and orthopedic sanatorium built between 1866 and 1869, which he named the “Johannisbad Zwickau.”
Upon his death in 1887, he bequeathed the bathhouse, along with all cash reserves and the entire movable inventory, to the city, with the stipulation that the bathhouse be preserved and expanded.
The city accepted the bequest. As a result, the newly built Art Nouveau swimming hall was opened to the public in February 1904. For nearly 70 years, the Johannisbad was the only indoor swimming facility in Zwickau. In 1991, the facility was closed due to its dilapidated condition. In 1995, the “Save the Johannisbad” support association was founded, which repeatedly highlighted the need to preserve the Johannisbad through various initiatives.
The joint efforts of the city administration and the support association to preserve the Johannisbad ultimately led to the inclusion of Zwickau’s Nordvorstadt district in the European “URBAN” funding program. With that, nothing stood in the way of reconstruction. After two years of renovation work, the facility was opened to the public in May 2000.
With its extraordinary architecture combined with state-of-the-art facilities, the Johannisbad offers you a unique leisure experience. The result is a historic swimming pool that welcomes every guest with a touch of Oriental bathing culture.
Today, visitors to the indoor pool area can enjoy a multipurpose pool of approximately 170 square meters. A built-in adjustable floor allows for different water depths. The experience is enhanced by built-in floor jets, massage jets, and a fountain featuring a lindworm as a water spout. The indoor pool area also includes a wading pool and a whirlpool.
A generously designed sauna area offers three dry saunas with different temperatures, a steam bath, a warm-air bath, an outdoor pool, an ice-cube spitter with a fountain, a beverage bar, two modern solariums, a relaxation room, and a relaxation hall that has been preserved in its original condition. One of the facility’s attractions is a snow chamber where it snows even in the height of summer.
