Swan Pond Park
1–2 hours
Outdoors
The Park am Schwanenteich is Zwickau’s oldest landscaped garden. The foundation for the complex, which originally consisted of five ponds, was laid in 1473 on the initiative of two councilmen and mining entrepreneurs, Martin Römer and Hans Federangel.
The plans for the park’s design, with the Great Pond at its center, were created in the mid-19th century by the renowned landscape architect Carl Eduard A. Petzold. In its original form and use, Schwanenteichpark is exemplary of 19th-century garden art and embodies all the characteristics of a city park from the time of its creation. The swans that have made the pond their home since 1850 ultimately gave the park its current name.
In the 1950s, the park took on its current character as a public park. The expansive meadows, the gondola station, and the play castle on the Melzerwiese offer a wide range of opportunities for sports and play. In addition, numerous clubs use the area. The extensive network of paths allows for relaxing walks with interesting views over the vast expanse of water of the Schwanenteich and the varied park areas.
