Coal mining shaped the development and character of the Zwickau region for about 700 years. Although the last mine ceased operations in 1978, numerous remnants still serve as a reminder of this centuries-old tradition.
For example, there are still slag heaps and former mine buildings, as well as field and street names that keep our memories alive. The nature trail in Bockwa and Oberhohndorf winds through the most heavily mined area of the former Zwickau coal mining region.
It pays tribute to this tradition and highlights some (almost) forgotten facts. You can start the loop trail at the mining monument near the Schedewitzer Muldenbrücke bridge or at St. Matthew’s Church in the Bockwa neighborhood.
