It is the former city palace of Zwickau. First mentioned in 1292 as Castrum Czwickaw, it was severely damaged in a city fire in 1403, demolished between 1404 and 1407, and rebuilt under Margrave Wilhelm I. Under Elector Christian I, the castle complex was converted into a magnificent Renaissance palace between 1587 and 1590.
In the 18th century, a prison was established in the castle, which was used, with interruptions, until the period following World War II. Numerous prominent prisoners were held here, including Karl May and August Bebel.
Since 2008, following extensive reconstruction, it has served as a senior living facility.
