The building that once housed the Galerie am Domhof opened on December 22, 1876, as an exhibition hall for the Zwickau Art Association. The building, designed in the Neoclassical style, was partially constructed on the medieval foundation walls of a Latin school that had stood on the same site. Parts of the vaults are still intact.
In 1904, an extension was added to the east, where the Art Association’s collection was displayed. After the association was dissolved, the building served various purposes, including as a natural history museum.
In 1977, the building opened as the Municipal Gallery and remains an ideal platform for those interested in the regional art scene.
Supported by the Kunstverein Zwickau e. V. and its programs at the Studio for Painting and Graphic Arts, various exhibitions take place. The associations based here offer a diverse range of events, from readings and lectures to cabaret.
Exhibitions at the Galerie am Domhof have been temporarily suspended. Since January 1, 2025, the premises have served as temporary quarters for the Zwickau Art Collections, which are expected to undergo renovation until the end of 2028.
The activities of the Kunstverein Zwickau e. V. remain unaffected by the closure.
In the In-Between Space
While the museum building on Lessingstraße is closed for construction, we have found a temporary home in the historic Kunstverein building on Domhof. In the heart of Zwickau’s Old Town, you can experience art in a whole new way at this historic venue.
Here you’ll find a fresh perspective on our collection, as well as an exciting testing ground for new exhibition designs. In addition to showcasing the “
” and various other areas of the collection (FarbRAUM), a new digital presentation of Max Pechstein’s work (MaxRAUM), and smaller, rotating, and contemporary exhibition projects (FreiRAUM), the three exhibition spaces offer a variety of possibilities.
A special highlight is the MaxRAUM, dedicated to Zwickau’s world-famous son, Max Pechstein (1881–1955). The unique works from the Max Pechstein Museum are currently on an international tour while the museum is under construction. The expressionist’s legacy remains alive in Zwickau.
Our new spaces offer opportunities for bold ideas and fresh perspectives. We also invite you to attend events and educational programs in our KreativRAUM. Our doors are open to you so you can experience art in all its diversity. Join us for guided tours, workshops, and interactive activities, and let the newly redesigned spaces inspire you!
